Summary/Abstract: The face is an element of recurrence at Eminescu, in most of the poems the image of the lover appears, whose portrait is often angelic, soft, gentle, but also acquiring demonic aspects. This approach starts from the conception of Roman Ingarden regarding the elements that define, characterize and, implicitly, determine the portrait. That work has three chapters. In the first, it’s contexts in which the grammatical determinations of the noun FACE, the parts of speech that determine it, as well as its frequency are detectable (identifiable). Also, I will consider identifying style figures, which contribute to the portraiture. In the second chapter, it’s talking about the affective determination, by analyzing some representative poems, as well as illustrating the relationship between the two types of determination. In a last chapter, I will refer to another type of determination, namely the paradoxical determination, which contributes to the achievement of the portrait by highlighting a philosophical substrate. Later, I will corroborate the grammatical determination with the philosophical one, by emphasizing the relationship between the poetic idea, the artistic means, but also the grammatical means. I can say that the image of the lover, from the Eminescian perspective, is closely related to the idea of corporeality, and by corporeality we mean, first of all, the physiognomy. In order to follow the Eminescian perception on the face, more precisely this dynamic of the portrait, I will operate a classification of the poems according to the frequency of the face noun. The various adjectives that determine the face noun are accompanied by images, which are outlined by style figures such as: antithesis (the most common process), enumerations, metaphors, epithets, comparisons of the most unusual. In fact, the three types of determinations, namely, grammatical, affective and philosophical, are in obvious interdependence, because they represent the main techniques of constituting the portrait, through antinomies, binomials or pure suggestions that contribute to the outline image.
