ON THE STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL PECULIARITIES OF ENGLISH ADVERB

Summary/Abstract: In modern English Grammar the adverb is considered as one of the complex notional parts of speech due to its characteristic features and frequency of occurring in the process of communication and in literary texts as well. The adverb indicates how, when, where something happens or is done. It can modify verbs, another adverbs and adjectives. When classified as to form the adverb is primary, derivative and compound. English primary adverbs have no suffixes, in old English they could modify only verbs. The majority of adverbs, whether new or old, like adjectives, are derived from other parts of speech. According to semantics adverbs can be divided into the following groups: Adverbs of time and duration, adverbs of place/direction, adverbs of manner, adverbs of measure and degree, modal, conjunctive, relative and interrogative adverbs. Like adjectives they have the grammatical category of degree of comparison. Adverbs are mostly used as adverbial modifier.
