Summary/Abstract: The short story, unlike the novel, can be analyzed as a miniature work in which every detail contributes to the rendering of meaning and the creation of a network of symbols that suggest the transition from the real to the mythical realm. Turning to magic and folklore, to universal myths is a way in which the 60’s writers trespass the norms of "realism", using ludicrous and seemingly absurd associations. The story ”Orpheus in Inferno” by Nicolae Breban is a rewriting of the ancient Greek myth in a unique and modern way. The result is the accumulation of multiple meanings. The story describes both the place the writer occupies in the communist society and the process of creation itself.
