Summary/Abstract: The Art of Fugue was proposed to be published to Eminescu Publishing House in 1971, a manuscript rejected by the communist censorship. This broken debut, as it was called by Dan Silviu Boerescu, was the cause of a great disappointment felt by the young Culianu, which might have caused him to seek refuge abroad. The volume reproduces a "large production of childhood and adolescence", written on hundreds of pages on school notebooks and student paper sheets. The content of the posthumous volume The Art of Fugue was written between 1967-1972, representing the school writings of a "teenage child", collected in a "volume of prose before the exile". According to the editor, the original manuscript could have been lost in the meantime, turned into ashes or preserved somewhere, waiting "to be rediscovered in its entirety”. Nevertheless, the author keeps the idea of the fugue in future creations, an art of fugue written in the exile symbolizing the dynamism of the mind metamorphosed in novel Hesperus, the Art of Transformation being a metaphor of cognition.
