DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE IN ROMANIAN AS A SECOND LANGUAGE: TEACHING IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PRINCIPLES AND STRATEGIES OF THE POA METHOD (PRODUCTION-ORIENTED APPROACH)

Summary/Abstract: Starting from the main characteristics of the audience targeted by the Production-oriented approach (i.e. learners with good passive knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, but with limited communicative competence), the current paper will attempt to investigate to what extent can the adoption of the principles and teaching strategies of the Production-oriented approach assist in improving the linguistic production of students learning Romanian as a second language. To this end, we propose and analyse a 6-hour teaching unit, aiming at the development of the students’ ability to express and defend their point of view on a current topic. The target group consists of 25 international students, studying Romanian as a second language for a year, with the purpose of enrolling in various academic programs in Romania. Their proficiency level in Romanian is between B1 and B2 (on the scale introduced by CEFR). The results obtained by applying the Production-oriented approach will be triangulated with student questionnaires and interviews.
