Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present an overview of Scandinavian crime fiction and to present the development and rise of the Nordic noir genre – its origin, characteristics, prominent authors andtitles from the entire Nordic area – with an emphasis on Norwegian crime fiction. Moreover, the paper tries to demonstrate certain traditional themes and motifs that can be found in Scandinavian crime fiction and to make a suggestion as why this kind of fiction is so beloved by the reading pubic from all over the world.
