Summary/Abstract: In Italian literature of the 1960s, the distinction between elitism and the mainstream culture isa dominant one. During this period of time, features leading to the massification and the americanization of Italian society can be observed. A notable proponent of the idea of preserving and emphasizing the specificity is writer Leonardo Sciascia. His body of literary works introduces current topics which the intellectual should present for public reflection, such as freedom, injustice, possible solutions to humankind’s problems. It is curious to follow his point of view, in his interviews and works, to draw conclusions about the elitism or the mass features of Italian literature and to answer the research question of whether it can be related to the high culture or low (popular) literary field. For this reason, the 1960s will be examined, the socio-cultural features of Italy at that time will be highlighted, the views and the position of the intellectual will be analyzed, with a focus on the body of work of a significant writer at that time – Leonardo Sciascia (1921–1989).
