Her writings deal with such major themes as the woman figure in the Maghrebian society before, during and after the colonial experience, the struggle between tradition and modernity in the patriarchal societies, where Islamic rules forbid the presence of women in the public space. Taking into account three novels from different periods of creation, this article deals with the literary project of Assia Djebar as seen through the theme of tradition/modernity and woman’s condition in the patriarchal Algerian society.
