Summary/Abstract: This article presents the process by which the Industrial Revolution brought irreversible changes to the traditional textile industry by presenting two case studies: the cotton industry in Great Britain (1780-1850) and the impact of industrialization on the domestic industry in Mărgău, Cluj County (1880-1980). The transformations produced in the typology of traditional textiles in the 19th century were strongly influenced by the technological innovations that emerged during the Industrial Revolution. Starting in the last two decades of the 19th century, the products of the factory – yarns, fabrics, laces, trimmings, garments, etc. – began to be included in Romanian peasant clothing. This use of factory textiles did not occur suddenly, but selectively and gradually. Some communities remained conservative in keeping traditional textiles for a longer period of time, while others accepted the change, but only partially, by social and age categories. The Romanian domestic industry went into a decline that lasted until the middle of the 20th century, when local traditional textiles were put out of use and kept only for festive occasions.
