Summary/Abstract: At the end of the 20th century, significant changes took place in textile art in Latvia. The created textile works confirm that the use of the versatility of old textile techniques has become a platform for interpretation and for the creation of innumerable new techniques, marking the most characteristic feature of the field in this period. Until now, the practical side (technique) of textile making has hardly been considered and evaluated in the theoretical descriptions. It should be noted that its essential components – the diversity of techniques and methods – have been constantly changing, reflecting the trends in Europe and America, and with them the style and way of thinking of the authors. To broaden the understanding of textile works, this work aims to review and describe the basic principles of textile techniques and to trace the manifestations of the artist’s creative impulse in the context of textile creation, thus expanding the understanding of textile works. The analysis of selected examples uses publications in periodicals, reports of leading researchers in textile art of the time, exhibition catalogs, and the author’s personal experience. This work researches the meaning of “tapestry technique” and analyzes five other textile techniques – batik, plaiting, knitting, embroidery, quilting, and the author’s technique. This study concludes that the process of creating a textile work has become multilayered, with a certain thinking practice that highlights the research approach, emphasizing that in textile work there are three equal factors – idea, material, and technique – which are inseparable.
