Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of the essence of sophisms, the analysis of the main approaches to the interpretation of the concept of «sophism», and the clarification of the logical grounds for the use of sophisms. Sophisms are considered both in the status of the manifestation of logical errors and in the status of the implementation of manipulative techniques. The question of admissibility of using sophisms in argumentation is raised, the logical basis of traditional and modern sophisms is revealed.
