Summary/Abstract: In Latvia, we have long faced the problem that the Livonians and the Livonian heritage are generally not very visible. To mitigate this, the Institute of Livonia at the University of Latvia, in cooperation with the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO and the Latvian National Cultural Center under the Ministry of Culture, has declared 2023 as the Year of Livonian Heritage in order to pay attention to the Livonian roots of the regions of Latvia historically inhabited by Livonians. Two more important perspectives can be distinguished on how to talk about Livonians. On the one hand, there is the Livonian heritage that has lasted for centuries and has reached the present day - it is the living Livonian language and living traditions, which are passed on by the people belonging to the Livonian community. On the other hand, the wider Livonian footprint is part of the history and common cultural heritage of the entire Baltic region. This trace can be seen most in Latvia.
