Summary/Abstract: This paper visits some of the thoughts Virginia Woolf shared with the public of Time and Tide magazine, in December 1934, when she published one of her essays, entitled Royalty, a review of The Story of My Life by Marie, Queen of Roumania. Not only does the essayist portray Queen Marie through her, at that time, recently published autobiography, but she also embraces the opportunity to invite readers to reflect on the institution of monarchy and its establishment; she turns to metaphorical projections and outlines the story of a Queen for whom writing opened the bars of her Řgolden cageř and whose „virtue„ of pen „has won her freedomŗ (Woolf 1952 [1934]: 191).
