Summary/Abstract: The aim of my presentation is to show the complexity of the relationship established between Radu Petrescu as a reader and the texts which serve him as both sources of aesthetic pleasure and means of self confirmation. My first concern was to bring to light the two main possible manners of relating to a text, which may be seen as emerging from Jean Starobinskiřs famous theory about the interpreterřs gaze as ,,critical relationŖ. Thus, one is governed by the delight of discovering similarities with the authorřs conception of life and art, recognising him as a forerunner and a model. The other stays dominated by the readerřs tendency to lay emphasis on those aspects which make him different (he himself being a writer, in his turn) from the author, generating a gap between them. In short, Radu Petrescuřs diaries, containing a large amount of reflections on literature, illustrate how a writer deeply interested in literary technique makes use of his reading experience as a means of checking the pertinence of his own discoveries, developing, thus, the art of his novels.
