ANGLICISMS IN NUTRITIONAL MEDICAL TEXTS

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the analysis of the necessary anglicisms from two Romanian nutritional medical texts: Diabet, nutriție și boli metabolice (addressed exclusively to experts) and Ghid pentru alimentație sănătoasă (addressed to experts and non-experts). We have shown that some anglicisms can be replaced by their correspondences in Romanian language, and that is necessary to introduce anglicisms in the Romanian medical dictionaries, as well as to complete in the existing definitions. Anglicisms appear in the corpus as such or combined with determinants that confer specific language to the medical language. Most anglicisms have been identified in the first text. Instead, the Romanian guidelines for a healthy diet has a very limited number of anglicisms, which demonstrates the authors' concern for the transmission of medical information more easily understood by the non-expert public. We believe that anglicisms are necessary in medical texts of nutrition because most of them do not currently have a correspondent in Romanian language but are characterized by accuracy, and international recognition in medical language. Moreover, we consider that the translation or replacement of anglicisms by Romanian equivalences is not always recommended because it can lead to semantic confusions.
