Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the issue of evidentiary value of archival materials considered in the context of the more recent views of archival theorists in North America. It is about changing views by moving from the notion that archival documents are primarily evidence-based. This is related to the position of a classic of English archival science, Hilary Jenkinson. American archival theorists now support the notion that archives are meant to serve the public, not the authorities. This is based on the belief that the question of what the archives inform about is just as important as what they keep silent about.
