Fair trade: an opportunity or a threat for the development of the south?

Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the concept of fair trade as an alternative model of development for the countries of the South. This approach, however, raises many questions and concerns, which means that the promoted model does not fulfill its objectives, and may even cause harmful effects. The article aims to answer the question posed in the title: does fair trade provide an opportunity for the development of the South, and thus contribute to reducing poverty and improvement of living conditions of marginalized producers or does not it meet up hopes put in it?
