The experience of global economy with global imbalances as a crisis-breeding element

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present the main episodes of the historical global imbalances against the background of the evolution of the international monetary system. Taking such a perspective creates an interesting research possibility as global imbalances are a phenomenon which is difficult to investigate due to its complexity (many determinants, difficulties in assessing its impact on financial crisis). Focusing on historical episodes of global imbalances may help to understand whether they can destabilize a monetary system as well as predict its potential role in creating crisis situations.
