Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the essays that Miodrag Pavlović (1928–2014) dedicated to seven Serbian poets: Laza Kostić, Vojislav Ilić, Jovan Dučić, Vladislav Petković Dis, Stanislav Vinaver, Rastko Petrović and Momčilo Nastasijević. Given that they were written on different occasions and in the course of two decades – from the second half of the 1950s to the mid-1970s, we have highlighted their mutual discrepancies not only in terms of the manner of their composition, but also in terms of the subject matter and, sometimes, the method demonstrated. Starting from the representatives of different epochs and movements, whom we have selected according to the dominant stylistic and value criterion – from those appearing at the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, to those who were active during the 1920s and ‘30s, we have striven to outline the trajectory of our modern poetry (from the mature Romanticism to some avant-garde trends). In other words, we have attempted to follow and describe major changes that took place with the appearance of the above poets, particularly those changes that produced far-reaching consequences for the generations of poets that followed – in regard to metrics, contents, i.e. themes and motifs or the language used, as well as in regard to poetic techniques applied. Also, once we have touched upon the literary-historical development, it became inevitable to pose a complex and always topical question of the links established not only among these authors, but also between them and the authors belonging to the European circle, all the more so as Pavlović himself formulated the stance that progress in the so-called minor literatures “is most evidently manifested in the shift of influences and sources from major foreign literatures”. Whenever we found it worthwhile, our analysis went to that direction, testifying, within individual stages, to the incongruent development of Serbian compared to European poetry.
