Summary/Abstract: The work presents an analysis of the mask, a character who is the bearer of medieval aesthetic and poetic principles, who in various ways cannot survive in the new time, nor to overcome its essence and adhere to new artistic principles. We analyze the novels of Umberto Eco, Milorad Pavić and Orhan Pamuk, three postmodern authors who use the mask technique to express their specific attitude towards the Middle Ages, both Roman Catholic and Orthodox and Islamic. We also compare the main motifs that appear in all three novels – art, the search (for murderers and identities), blindness and the figure of a demon who carries aesthetic changes inconsistent with tradition.
