Summary/Abstract: The relationship between the city and its vicinity has been undergoing a fundamental change, calling many old approaches into question, and challenging local societies and decision-makers. The regions of East-Central Europe have several specificities that render it difficult to adopt traditional western approaches and procedures. This article attempts to interpret peri-urban developments by incorporating local features and transcending the dichotomy of town and countryside.
