ACTIVITY OF THE CATHOLIC SOCIAL UNION REGARDING EMMIGRATION FROM THE ROMAN CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF PRZEMYŚL

Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the 19th century, Galicja saw massive economic emigration, to which the Church had to respond as emigration affected the behavior of the faithful, faith crises, religious breakdowns, or rejection of moral principles. In the Roman Catholic Diocese of Przemyśl, emigration pastoral care was originated by Bishop Józef Sebastian Pelczar. The problem of emigration was addressed in parishes, deaneries and dioceses. Among the many efforts made in the Przemyśl diocese to provide pastoral care to emigrants and to prevent the negative effects of emigration, one should mention the work of the Catholic Social Union. This organization was intended to direct all social activities of the Church. In many parishes, the Union branches had separate sections set up to deal with emigration. This issue was addressed in public speeches and talks. Emigrants themselves were supported organizationally, materially and morally. The Union also took care of their proper spiritual formation, whereas emigration itself was hardly ever opposed.
