Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the question of the beginning of art. Ideas that can be traced back to medieval and renaissance times are revealed. The texts present legends related to the beginning of painting, picture or portrait, or of what is called "art". The origin of art is associated with God or higher beings in most of the texts. They create the first painting,portrait or painting, which is then practiced by people as art. When the story of the mythical beginning began to be accepted with doubt, more reliable explanations began to be sought or formulated for the answer to the question of the beginning of art.
