Behind the Scenes of Managing the Academy in the Polish People’s Republic

Summary/Abstract: The article reconstructs Stefan Żółkiewski’s (a.k.a. Hetman) political involvement between1948 and 1958. It is mainly based on archival and memoir materials, using methodologicalinspiration from Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology, the paradigm of clues, and oral history. Theauthor shows the particular conditions affecting the fate of Polish scholars from the 1910generation and foregrounds the recurring problems of scientific policy.
