Erudition: Needless, Necessary

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the notion of erudition as a necessary resource for the functioning ofthe academic field and practices in the humanities. Erudition is understood as knowledgebeyond the immediate functional and useful knowledge of a situation. The article isbased on knowledge gained through autoethnography. The author posits that neoliberalreforms of science exhaust erudition as a resource, thereby undermining the academicfield’s reproduction and university functioning.
