Summary/Abstract: In this Pastoral letter we will discuss the life of a centurion, the name of which would have never been recorded in history books if he had not had the chance to be around Jesus Christ when He was crucified and died on the cross. On the pages of the New Testament, four roman centurions were mentioned, of whom two are mentioned by their names: Cornelius (Acts of the Apostles chapter 10) and Julius (Acts of the Apostles 27, 1-3), while the other two were only mentioned by the role they were assigned in the army. According to church traditions, the centurion that stabbed Christ in the rib with a spear was the one also responsible for His crucifixion and the blood and water that poured from His wound cured the man’s eye of a serious disease. In Greek, which is the language of the New Testament, “spear” means “longhi”, and this is the origin of the centurion’s name, Longinus, used throughout the church history.Following the events of Christ’s death on the cross, Longinus believed that He was the Son of God, being the first Roman soldier to confess the divinity of the Savior, but also the first holy soldier of the church.
