Summary/Abstract: This article aims to examine the development of the approach of the unknown narrator in the fourth century of hijra. In this framework, issues such as whether the determination of unknown narrators continued actively in the fourth century of hijra, which criteria were used to determine the unknown narrators, and what terminology the critic used in this field would be examined. In addition, a clearer picture will be drawn regarding the profile of the unknown narrator by focusing on the regions and the characteristics of the chains of the transmitters identified by the critic. In the light of this information, a place will be signed for unknown narrators in narratives related to the history of hadith and rijāl criticism. In the article, the detailed and systematic work of ʻUqaylī (d. 322/934), named Kitāb al-Duʻafā, which was written in the fourth century of the hijra, was taken as a basis. Finally, it is seen that the approach of the unknown narrator in the above-cited century is a continuation of the one that was formed in the third century of the hijra in terms of both understanding and terminology.
