Summary/Abstract: The article looks at the civilian use of unmanned aircraft (in the media, usually referred to as drones). Civilian application of unmanned aircraft is increasing rapidly as the technology improves and becomes more affordable. The article discusses the current and future applications, opportunities and barriers for the development of this technology. The article is an abridged translation of ‘Civilian Drones’ report published by the UK Parliamentary Office of Science & Technology, Houses of Parliament (POSTnote No. 479, October 2014).
