Summary/Abstract: By the time the first dictionary of the Polish language by Samuel Linde was published, several dozen translation lexicons had been published, in which the Polish language was once in the position of the initial language, and other times – the target language. The number and variety of such dictionaries should make them important material for a researcher of the history of the Polish language. However, a review of selected textbooks of the history of the Polish language shows that the potential of dictionaries is not used enough. The article strives to prove that translation lexicons are a source of equal value in relation to other texts for building a general reflection on the history of the Polish language. This hypothesis is illustrated with examples from the field of graphical variability, the development of the language system, linguistic awareness and historical and cultural phenomena.
