Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the books of the personal library of the 19th century Lithuanian historian Teodor Narbutt that are currently held in the Vilnius University Library. There are 106 titles, 174 physical units of books with provenances of Narbutt. He usually marked the books in his personal library in Szawry with stamps and inscriptions. The books were bound in the three types of covers by his personal bookbinder. The books in the Narbutt library were numbered using stickers with serial numbers on the bottom of the back. Most of the books in the Narbutt library are historical. It is only in historical books that we find a lot of Narbutt’s manuscript notes: supplements, corrections of errors, text comments and additional data about the authors or historical events. Larger texts of supplementary material with references to sources are provided on separate bound leaves. In addition, he relied on other sources or fragments of the same text, correcting errors in the printed texts and writing his own additions with references to the text. After researching the books of the Narbutt library, their provenances, the character of the margins, the historian’s tendency to correct factual mistakes in texts, specify the sources on which he relied in correcting errors in the printed texts, it can be said that Narbutt was an historian-investigator who was extremely precise, meticulous, highly accurate and especially intolerant of factual errors.
