THE IMPORTANCE OF HAZELNUT IN TURKEY AND THE RELATIONSHIP OF AREA-BASED INCOME SUPPORT TO HAZELNUT WITH THE YIELD AND PRODUCTION AREA: PANEL DATA ANALYSIS WITHIN THE SCOPE OF SELECTED PROVINCES

Summary/Abstract: Turkey lags behind other hazelnut growing countries in terms of hazelnut yield in recent years. The low yield of hazelnuts in the country brings along economic as well as agricultural problems. Countries with high productivity and where significant investments and incentives are applied to increase their share in the sector can expand the production area and put pressure on Turkey's dominance in the sector in the coming years. The aim of the study is to evaluate the financial supports for the development of the hazelnut sector in Turkey and the adequacy of these supports. For this purpose, in Giresun, Ordu and Trabzon, which are among the leading provinces in hazelnut production in Turkey, the relationship between the "area-based income support" made to the hazelnut sector in the period 2009-2021 and the hazelnut harvest and production area was investigated by econometric method. Panel data method was used as econometric method. According to the findings of the study, it has been observed that the support for the hazelnut sector has been insufficient in the face of increasing inflation and input costs in recent years. The results of the analysis show that the area-based income support for the sector in the mentioned regions has significant and positive effect on the hazelnut harvest and production area.
