Summary/Abstract: The Turkish Grand National Assembly opened under extraordinary conditions during Turkey’s National Struggle. It laid the the foundations of a new Turkish state in Anatolia. Hungarians closely followed the National Struggle against the occupiers of Anatolia and supported it. Moreover, they and Hungarian Parliament welcomed its success alongside both the signing of the Lausanne Peace Treaty and the proclamation of the Turkish Republic. Likewise, developments in the domestic politics of the young Turkish Republic and the important laws enacted in the 1920s continued to attract the attention of Hungarians. In this study, we shall examine the launch of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and the important developments in Turkish political life during the early years of the Turkish Republic – through the lens of Hungarian sources. We also will look at the conditions under which Assembly came to be, with a particular focus on Ankara, the centre of the National Struggle. Our primary aim is to try and understand how Hungarians viewed the conditions under which the parliament. Many a report published in the 1930s by Hungarian ambassadors to Turkey during the Atatürk’s reign frequently cite the TBMM, the People’s Party, and Turkey’s political climate at the time. They furthermore talk about how the TBMM was structured and functioned, thus offering us a different perspective on political life in Turkey from the angle of foreign diplomats.
