Summary/Abstract: Economy is a key element that dictates how people interact with one another – one of many kinds of relationships societies and those in them exercise in order to meet their basic needs. In economic relations, money drives mutual exchange and shopping transactions, and as an instrument of mutual debt. In this study, we will try to examine “murabaha,” a kind of economic borrowing system widely used in Trabzon (Turkey) between 1680 and 1700. Using examples, we will explain how wealthy people and institutions alike managed, spent, as well as lent their capital to those in need, in exchange for a certain percentage of profit. We’ll also look at key historical figures who drove the murabaha system, alongside how the system ultimately affected regional (armed) conflict. Source-wise, we’ve drawn from local court records from the period.
