Summary/Abstract: The top / bottom is a binary opposition. It describes the orientation of objects in the space; it also identifies the spatial qualification of an object, and models the coordinate system of the linguistic (dialectal) worldview. This article deals with the issue of the lexical-semantic interpretation of one of the extremes of this opposition, the concept of bottom. It is represented by base words низ, діл, під (спід) in the dialects of the Ukrainian language. The author scrutinizes the semantics of the base words. The semantic features of the basic words are analysed within the semantic fields (“Relief”, “Building”, “Body”, “Clothing & Shoes”, “Haying”, “Society”, etc.), as well as in accordance with the semantic sub-complexes (‘the part of the object’, ‘limit’, ‘surface’). The meanings of these words represent different aspects of the Ukrainian life. This study applied the traditional onomasiological model of description, shifting the stress from the meaning to the word. The sources include historical and regional dictionaries and texts, as well as linguistic atlases. As based on an analysis of historical sources and manuscripts of the Ukrainian language, semantic changes were recorded at different historical stages.
