Summary/Abstract: The age-old Polish question: “to fight or not to fight?”, also shaped three generations of the Tarnowski family of Dzików. Although in the 19th and 20th centuries this prominent Polish aristocratic family no longer held as much significance as it did a few centuries earlier, its representatives actively participated in all important political and military events. This was the case during the Napoleonic era, as well as during the 19th-century uprisings. By engaging in them, despite the awareness of the small chances of success, they not only pursued the family knightly ethos but also skillfully managed to combine a romantic attitude with political prudence.
