Summary/Abstract: The work of the most renowned Ottoman architect Sinān is considered the pinnacle of classical Ottoman architecture. More than 300 different buildings are attributed to it, among which mosques dominate. This study aims to analyze the developmental phases of Sinān’s five-decade work, more precisely his research and optimization of the spatial concepts of mosques. His ultimate idea is to form a unique uninterrupted space in which all the elements are subordinate to the whole. The core of its spatial setting is a domed baldachin supported by four, six, or eight supports. Such dominant spatial form dictates the overall definition of the mosque plan with side extensions and the various roofing forms. He experiments with structural and spatial solutions and never repeats the same scheme. Each subsequent work resulted in the “modernization” of the overall architectural expression. In the early phase, he strives to achieve a balance of all elements of the space and to subordinate them to the domical baldachin. He reaches the complete harmony of all elements of the space in the classical phase. Continuing to experiment, in his late mature period, he logically deviates from the postulates of the classical style, which results in new forms and relationships in space. The analysis of selected examples showed that Sinān sought innovatively or reinterpreted concepts and forms and the overall order of elements in space and facades, in which he succeeded.
