Summary/Abstract: The question of the self is the most important topic in Muhammad Iqbal’s thought. Iqbal understood this question not only as the deepest of human existence, but also as the most important cosmological topic. The encounter with Henri Bergson’s “Creative Evolution” will leave a decisive impact on him and give him key incentives for a deeper understanding of development - as the essence of the cosmos, Islam - as a spiritual movement in history, and the self - as a kind of self-creation in duration. Iqbal’s contribution to modern Muslim philosophy was reflected not only in a deep, credible and unique understanding of the impact of modernity on Islam and Muslims, but also in an engaged attempt to construct a modern Muslim self in the first decades of the twentieth century. Although he was a poet and philosopher, as much speculative as analytical, Iqbal’s main goal was very practical: the inner and outer transformation of the individual and the community.
