Transmission of the Sunnah Between Legal Schools and the Science of Hadith

Summary/Abstract: The legacy of the Prophet, p.b.u.h., was passed down by generations of scholars and represents an inexhaustible source of guidance and standards for the ummah (Muslim community). In addition to the principles and regulations of faith, the sunnah, as the broadest term used for this heritage, is a source of inspiration and an integral concept of the identity of all its members. In that context, when it comes to legal schools (madhhabs), there are elements concerning the transmission of the Sunnah that have not been given enough importance. Instead, certain approaches have been established as valid and meritorious without ever being approached critically. Through the analysis of the process of development of the science of fiqh and hadith, we tried to reexamine the established views on the position of the sunnah and hadith in the madhhabs, but also look back at the role that the madhhabs played in that context. The paper gives an overview of these significant aspects related to the transmission of the Sunnah through the legacy of legal schools and hadith science.
