Summary/Abstract: Our research analyzes the narratives employed by the Russian president Vladimir Putin and the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in their speeches regarding the military actions in Ukraine from the 19th of February to the10th of March 2022. The battle on the ground between Russia and Ukraine is doubled by the two presidents’ discursive confrontation. They both address their own audiences, opposing audiences and the international audience affected by this confrontation. They express powerful ideas that are the building blocks for strategic narratives through which they justify their action, they highlight the role they play in the conflict and set expectations for the future. Our narrative analysis identifies the major frames and topics of these narrative strategies as they unfolded at the beginning of the war and the results of these discursive confrontations.
