Summary/Abstract: Comeliu Zelea Codreanu (1899-1938) Comeliu Zelea Codreanu was the leader ofthe Iron Guard Movement up to November 1938 when he was assassinated, under the allegation that he was trying to escape, with a group of Iron Guard members, while he was being transported from one jail to another. TheodorIonescu (1884-1954) Theodor Ionescu fought as chief of staff of the Third Artillery Regiment in World War I; on the Eastern Front, following August 1941, he was the commander of the First Army Corps. He was sent into reserve in 1943, died in 1954, harassed by the communist regime, which denied him the right to return to active duty. Silvestru Macoveiciuc (1926-1969) At the age of only 17, Silvestru Macoveiciuc joined the group of anti-Soviet partisans led by his father, Vladimir Macoveiciuc, to fight the Soviet troops that had invaded Bukovina in the spring of 1944. He was imprisoned in the communist jails of Aiud and Târgu-Ocna. Ion Vulcănescu (1916-1991) A cousin of philosopher Mircea Vulcănescu, Ion Vulcănescu started in the spring of 1945 the Call of the Blood organization, which was anti-Soviet and anti-communist. In 1950 he was sentenced to 25 years of hard labour. He was pardoned in 1964. Ervin Claus (1895-1942) Colonel Ervin Claus fought in both world wars. He was killed in September 1942 during the battle for the Kerci Strait.
