Summary/Abstract: Gheorghe Avramescu (1884-1945?) General Gheorghe Avramescu was a supporter of the resistance on the Adjud-NămoloasaBrăila defense line and did not agree with the armistice of August 23, 1944. After August 23, he came back to command the Fourth Romanian Army; his job was to stop the German- Hungarian troops from reaching the Southern Carpathians. In October 1944 his troops crossed over to Hungary but on March 2, 1945 he was arrested with Generai Dragomir, apparently by the Soviets. No details are known about his disappearance and death. Gh. M. Cantacuzino (1899-1960) A great architect and university professor, Gh. M. Cantacuzino fought in World War Two on the eastern front, in the campaign in Bessarabia and Crimea. Following an attempt to leave the country, he was arrested by the communist regime and imprisoned at Aiud until 1953. Cristu Cantuniar (1892-1942) A general staff officer, Cristu Cantuniar participated with the Fourth Army and then as a commander of the Sixth Cavalry Division in the campaigns of Bessarabia, Kuban and Crimea, showing professionalism and an out-of-ordinary will to fight. Gheorghe Chiraș (1911-1955) Gheorghe Chiraș was in the partisan movement in Bukovina. He fought on the eastern front against the Soviet Union, he continued his anti-communist activity after 1945 in the Bukovina resistance movement led by Gavrilă Vatamaniuc. He was killed by the secret police (Securitate) in 1955.
