Summary/Abstract: Ștefan Foriș (1890-1945) A communist militant, secretary general of the Romanian Communist Party (P.C.R.) in 1941-1944, Ștefan Floriș was dismissed in April 1944 on suspicion of being a collaborator of the Security. He was arrested in June 1945 and assassinated without any court sentence. Gavrilă Mihaii-Ștrifundă (1901-1961) Gavrilă Mihali, also known as Ștrifundă, was one of the Romanian patriots who had the courage to rise against the intention of the Soviet occupation forces of annexing Maramureș to Sub-Carpathian Ukraine. Arrested many times by the communist authorities, he died in 1961 in the penitentiary of Botoșani. Nicolae Rădescu (1874-1953) Appointed President of the Council of Ministers on December 6, 1944, General Nicolae Rădescu distinguished himself by his strong resistance against the Soviet pressure that sought to take over the control of the P.C.R. He left Romania in June 1946 and became chairman of the Romanian National Council in New York City, where he continued to work for the liberation of Romania from under the Soviet Union’s tutelage. Ion Vasilescu-Valjan (1881-1960) A playwright and attorney between the wars, Ion Vasilescu-Valjan refused to cooperate with the communist regime and he was arrested in 1949. He went through the prisons of Văcărești, Aiud, Ocnele Mari, Pitești and died in 1960 in the Văcărești prison hospital.
