Summary/Abstract: Colour often conveys symbolic values and reflects the philosophy and culture of a linguistic community. Furthermore, its use in phraseological units generates new connoted meanings as the language evolves. Although extensive studies on the connotation of colours have been conducted, all of them are mainly focused on six basic colours (white, black, red, yellow, blue and green). In this sense, few comparative studies on the symbolism of purple in Spanish and Chinese have been reported. This study aims to carry out a comparative analysis from a cognitive perspective on the symbolism transmitted in the terms used for purple and their traces in the phraseological units in Spanish and Chinese. Through an in-depth analysis, we will demonstrate that there are more differences than similarities both in the way of the terms for purple are understood and in the number of phraseological units generated.
