Summary/Abstract: Stalin’s death in March 1953 brought some change in the policy of the eastern European communist regimes. The “thawing” that came to Romania, too, brought to the surface the megalomania and cynicism of those who ordered the building of the Danube-Black Sea Canal and the aberrant decisions that underlay this Stalinist project.
