Summary/Abstract: This article is an analysis of the McCarthy phenomenon and its impact on the American society. It emerged as a response to America’s impaired prestige in the first years after World War II and to the rise of communism world-wide. McCarthyism was an ideological “departure” from the patterns of the American democracy, but one which the Americans put behind soon enough.
