Summary/Abstract: This research examines the academic performance of Romanian students enrolled in the12th grade where they study in a digital French learning environment. After analyzing their use of digital instruments and the learning strategies to improve their speaking skills, we investigate some of their choices regarding the correlation between the use of digital French learning instruments and strategies. The data collected following the application of the questionnaire developed and distributed in an online survey form to the 97 students selected from the 12th grade Sciences and Philology classes have underlined two aspects. First, the most frequently used strategy remains memorizing at the expense of cognitive and metacognitive ones. Second, the apps and platforms that students use as a knowledge support to improve speaking skills are not necessarily related to the chosen strategy. From these findings, the study concludes that students’ understanding of the learning process is quite low to make them strategic learners in a digital French learning context. Furthermore, students need a well-organized guidance to develop digital French speaking skills. The suggestions and implications for further study are also discussed.
