Summary/Abstract: The point of departure for this article is a problem which students in literature face: their study is about texts and contexts and not about events encountered when reading. The two perspectives are linked to two distinctive concepts of literature: literature as a process of communication about the actual world and literature as a portal of access to a fictional world. The distinction is argued within a frame proposed by analytical literary theory and philosophy: the process of literary communication (the literary text in the actual world) seen from a semiotic perspective is distinct from the object of communication (the literary event in the fictional world) seen from a referential perspective. The distinction permits a more precise understanding of two perspectives on literature as it is taught and studied.
