Summary/Abstract: After the pro-Communist government led by Petru Groza had taken over on March 6, 1945, a strict surveillance was instituted against the representatives of the Catholic Church, who were suspected of anti-Communism and an anti-Soviet attitude. Monsignor Vladimir Ghika, a prince of the Catholic Church, was arrested in 1952 under charges of “treason” and “espionage in favor of the Vatican.” After a sham trial he was incarcerated at Jilava, where he died, probably on May 17, 1954.
