Summary/Abstract: A batch of love letters addressed to Alexandru D. Petcu, a naval officer turned geodetic officer, is the cause of the exploration of military archives to identify possible documents that would make it possible to reconstruct the officer's biography. The author of this article, which is the first of a series dedicated to this topic, exposes the chronological milestones of Alexandru Petcu's military career and sketches the portrait of the officer as he was seen and described by his commanders, information identified in the personal file kept in the military archives.
