Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the issue of material rewards granted by the communist regime, through the agency of an institution designed to exert control over literature - the Writers Union of the Romanian People’s Republic, to literati willing to serve the political project of the totalitarian party. The value of these rewards was sometimes huge (100 times the salary of a worker). The authorities knew how to repay their “friends.”
